Celebrating a Special Birthday at The Mangrove Resort, Iligan City
There’s nothing quite like gathering the whole family to celebrate a milestone, especially when the destination offers the perfect mix of relaxation, play, and beautiful ocean views.
Recently, we headed over to The Mangrove Resort on Bayug Island. For us, this trip was extra special because Iligan City is our home. While we love hitting the road to explore distant provinces, there is always a unique joy in discovering and highlighting the beautiful spots right in our own backyard. We were there for a very meaningful reason—to celebrate the birthday of my wonderful niece, Caroline.
The Ride to Bayug Island

As The Montero Guy, the adventure always begins the moment we start the engine. The drive from the city center out toward Bayug Island was incredibly relaxing. Rolling through our familiar local roads with the family packed inside the Montero immediately set a festive, weekend vibe. There is a distinct comfort in driving through your hometown, knowing that a hidden tropical escape is just a few minutes away.
A Walk on the Boardwalk
One of the first things that catches your eye upon arrival is the resort’s beautiful, long wooden boardwalk.

What makes it truly stunning is the scenery flanking the structure—lush, green mangroves stand proudly right beside the boardwalk. Walking along this path feels like a serene blend of nature and coast. As you stroll through, you can feel the refreshing beach water splashing gently against the wood, making it an incredibly scenic spot for family photos and a peaceful local walk.
Fun and Adventure for Every Generation
What makes this resort stand out is how well it caters to everyone, from the energetic kids to the adults looking to unwind. We set up base at the tables fronting the ocean, giving us a front-row seat to all the action:

- For the Active Crew: The resort features pickleball courts, which is a great way for the adults and teens to get a quick game in before hitting the water. They also offer kayaking for those who want to explore the waters.
- For the Little Ones: There is a dedicated kids’ playground that kept the younger ones entertained when they weren’t in the water.
- Water Fun: The absolute highlight for the kids was the swimming and diving. The resort has fantastic spots where the kids were safely diving into the water and splashing around for hours. Seeing the kids enjoying the water was the best thing we could have asked for.
Why The Mangrove Resort is a Great Family Escape
If you’re planning a family gathering or a birthday celebration in the area, this place checks all the boxes:
- Diverse Amenities: It’s rare to find a beach resort that balances a playground, pickleball, and water sports so well.
- Oceanfront Dining: Having tables right by the sea means you can enjoy your meals with the sound of the waves.
- Homegrown Beauty: The combination of the thriving mangroves right beside the path and the open sea gives it an authentic, relaxing vibe that makes us proud to call this area home.

I captured the birthday gathering—from our ride to the resort, to the walks along the wooden boardwalk bordered by mangroves, and finally the kids diving into the clear water.
