Cruising Through History: A Heritage Drive in Silay City, Negros Occidental
Some drives are meant for speed, while others are meant for slowing down to appreciate the stories etched into the walls around you.
On our latest trip, we took the Montero to Negros Occidental for a drive through Silay City. Known deeply for its rich history and beautifully preserved heritage, driving down the main highway here feels like taking a portal straight into the past.
Capturing the Timeline with the Insta360 X5
To fully take in the architecture, I had the Insta360 X5 running for this drive. Because Silay’s heritage buildings line both sides of the highway, a standard camera just wouldn’t do it justice. The 360-degree footage allowed us to capture the towering ancestral homes, the busy street life, and the sky all at once, letting you experience the drive exactly as we did from the inside of the vehicle.
Fast Food Meets the Past: Renowned Establishments in Heritage Style
One of the coolest highlights of driving through the city center is seeing how major, modern brands have adapted to the city’s historic vibe.
Instead of the standard modern, glassy structures you see everywhere else, famous fast-food chains and commercial spaces are uniquely housed inside beautifully preserved old ancestral buildings. We passed the local Jollibee, the McDonald’s, and several other renowned establishments that blend right into the historic town landscape. It proves that progress doesn’t have to mean tearing down our roots—it’s amazing to see these huge brands respecting local history!
The Highway Architecture
As you cruise down the highway, the sheer number of old buildings is incredible. Silay has dozens of certified heritage structures, and many of them sit right along or just off the main road. The grand wooden windows, wide driveways, and architectural designs date back to the golden era of the sugar industry.
