Trading the Roads for the Waves: A Mother’s Day Escape to Agutayan Island

If you follow my adventures, you know I’m usually behind the wheel of the Montero, finding peace on the highways of Mindanao. But for Mother’s Day, we decided to trade the asphalt for the ocean.

We packed up the family and headed to Jasaan, Misamis Oriental for a quick tropical escape to the stunning, crescent-shaped sandbar of Agutayan Island. It was a simple day trip, but the memories we made under the sun were absolutely priceless.

Setting Sail: The Boat Ride Experience

Because Agutayan is an uninhabited sandbar sitting in the middle of Macajalar Bay, getting there is half the fun.

  • Where to Rent: We headed straight to the Barangay Hall in Jampason, Jasaan to register and rent our boat. It’s the official and safest way to secure an accredited ride.
  • The Cost: Boat rental was a very reasonable ₱1,500 roundtrip.
  • The Journey: The motorized bangka ride takes about 15 to 20 minutes each way.

The water was incredibly calm and crystal clear during our crossing. But the absolute highlight of the ride? We actually spotted a pod of dolphins playing on our way to the island! Seeing those beautiful creatures arching out of the water right beside our bangka was an amazing surprise that the kids (and adults) won’t ever forget.

Island Vibes & Family Time

Agutayan Island is a naked sandbar surrounded by a vibrant 3-hectare marine sanctuary. Because there are no trees or permanent structures for shade, it truly feels like you’ve escaped to your own private slice of paradise.

The waters surrounding the island are incredibly clear, calm, and shallow near the shore, making it safe and perfect for family swimming, wading, and celebrating the moms in our life. We spent our day enjoying the refreshing sea breeze, sharing food, taking photos, and just unwinding.

💡 Quick Travel Tips for Agutayan Island:

  • Go Early: Since the sandbar has no natural shade, it’s best to head out early in the morning to beat the scorching midday heat.
  • Bring Your Own Supplies: There are no stores, fresh water sources, or resorts on the island. Make sure to pack plenty of drinking water, snacks, sunscreen, and trash bags to take your garbage back to the mainland with you!
  • Respect the Sanctuary: The area is a protected sanctuary famous for its giant clams. Avoid stepping on coral reefs or disturbing any marine life while snorkeling.

Watch the Mother’s Day Vlog (POV Video)

I’ve put together the footage of our entire boat ride, the surprise dolphin sighting, and our relaxing family time on the sandbar. You can practically feel the refreshing sea breeze through the screen!

Over the Horizon

Sometimes, stepping out of our comfort zone—and out of our favorite SUV—is exactly what we need to appreciate the diverse beauty of our home island. Celebrating Mother’s Day with the ocean on all sides and the family smiling was the perfect way to recharge.

To all the moms out there, we hope you had a relaxing and beautiful celebration!
